Back to School
Summer vacation is almost over and children will be heading back to school soon. Because some children will be walking to school, many for the first time, motorists are reminded to be alert for these children. Motorists are also reminded to be watchful especially in these situations:
In areas at or around schools where more students are normally found. Pay attention around these locations in the morning and afternoon hours. Be watchful at all intersections.
For children who may be riding bicycles. Look between cars and along the roadway for children who may run into the road.
At locations were school bus pick up and drop off takes place. Always stop for school busses that are loading or unloading students.
At school crossing sites and other intersections where students maybe crossing roadways. Watch for crossing guards at these locations and follow their instructions for stopping to allow children to cross roadways.
For school zones which have reduced speed limits.
Leave early so that you are not rushed when you travel to work or transport children to school.
Drive with your headlights on even during the day so that you can be seen bychildren and other motorists.
Bad weather will require extra caution due to reduced visibility and changes in road surface conditions that will affect your ability to slow down or stop.
In areas where you know there are concentrations of children and particularly around schools, put your cell phone away and pay attention to avoid potential tragedy.
New Insurance Requirement
Beginning June 1, a new state law mandates auto liability insurance coverage and requires drivers carry proof of insurance. Failing to produce the proof of insurance when requested by a law enforcement officer subjects the driver to a $10 citation if they have insurance but no proof. If there is no insurance at all, the citation penalty is significantly higher.Your automobile insurance policy must provide the following minimum liability coverage:
$50,000 for injury or death of one person;
$100,000 for injury or death of two or more people; and
$15,000 for property damage.
The law also requires uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage each with minimum limits of $100,000/$300,000 for bodily injury coverage. Consult the below listed websites for more information on insurance requirements.
